Willie Peters rules on Hull KR red card as triple change explained

Willie Peters has had his say on the ‘stop-start’ nature of Saturday’s loss to Wakefield Trinity with the Hull KR coach also addressing the red card for prop Sauaso Sue.

Fresh off their Wembley loss, Hull KR looked like they were going to edge out Wakefield Trinity but a 78th-minute Mason Lino try saw Trinity win 26-24 in a game that was filled with contentious moments.

Numerous captain’s challenges, lengthy video reviews, two sin bins and two red cards led to the game lasting over two hours and when asked about the officiating, Peters held back when speaking post-match to BBC Radio Humberside.

“It was a very stop-start game, wasn’t it,” Peters responded when asked about the officials.

“I’ll leave that to other people to decide but it was a long game.

“The decisions, the cards, were they worthy? Possibly, I’d need to have a good look at them. It was just a long sort of game.”

What Willie Peters said about the red card for Hull KR

Former Hull KR man Matty Storton was sent off for Wakefield on the hour mark with the Robins set to have a man advantage for the final 20 minutes, however, prop forward Sauaso ‘Jesse’ Sue landed a swinging arm that saw him sent off just minutes later.

“I need to have a good look at it, I did see that he swung his arm,” Peters said when asked about the decision, adding: “The ref has obviously seen it and then the video ref has agreed.

“Jesse is upset in the dressing room at the moment but he’s a valuable part to what we do.

“It’s not in his character to do it deliberately but he unfortunately has been sent off and he accepts that.”

Sue was part of a much-changed forward pack with Willie Peters making three changes as Jack Brown, who has since left to join Castleford, Dean Hadley (HIA) and Bill Leyland all dropped out.

Explaining those calls and their replacements, Peters said: “Jai  (Whitbread) obviously came back in, he had his baby boy during the week so he came back in and Jordan (Dezaria), I wanted to give an opportunity. He and Karl Lawton came in so it was just to freshen it up a little b it.

“We started Karl in the back-row, usually Dean is that person, but I thought he brought some energy to the group.

“Jez, we looked at him to play the full game. He got a bang to the knee but he got back on.”

The only other injury concern that Rovers may have is that Sam Luckley had a ‘niggle’, which Peters revealed to be a result of a longstanding knee issue.
