Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has spoken on one of his star’s England chances and the club’s title chances after their win over Wigan Warriors, with many now believing that the Robins are all but certain to lift the League Leaders Shield.
Their 10-6 win away over Wigan Warriors means that Hull KR sit six points clear of the Cherry and Whites with just five games remaining, however, Peters isn’t counting his chickens before they hatch in regards the club winning their first ever League Leaders Shield, and second piece of silverware this year.
“Job’s not done,” was his immediate and blunt response to BBC Radio Humberside post-match when asked about his side moving closer to that trophy.
Instead, he said: “We’ve got to worry about next week. We’ve got a really tough and challenging run but it’s full of opportunity. We’ve got Leeds next week who are one of the form teams and that’s another opportunity to improve.”
The Robins will also play St Helens and top six contenders Hull FC, Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves in a tough gauntlet of final fixtures but they’ll head into them with immense confidence after Friday night’s performance.
Jez Litten sends message to Shaun Wane as Peters backs Ashes call-up
One of the standouts from Friday night was hooker Jez Litten who was tasked with playing the full 80 minutes on account of the injury to Micky McIlorum. Litten’s performance was so strong in fact that Peters didn’t use interchange hooker Bill Leyland.
Playing in front of England coach Shaun Wane, Peters argued that Litten will have done his chances of featuring in the Ashes no harm.
“That’s a question for Shaun Wane. I certainly think so but that’s a question for Shaun,” the Hull KR boss said when asked about the prospect of Litten featuring against the Kangaroos.
“I’m sure he is watching all those guys in his squad and on the fringes but Jez did no harm to his chances tonight.
“I know if he did represent his country that he would do it in the right way and wouldn’t let anyone down, I know that.”
Hull KR motivated by growth not doubters, claims Peters
It marked a first win against the Warriors in four and the first time that Peters had led his side to victory against Wigan in Wigan.
Asked if snapping that streak and proving people wrong was a motivation, the Hull KR boss admitted it’s nice to see his players earn their flowers but he insisted it wasn’t the motivation.
He explained: “My role is making sure that we concentrate and focus on what is most important. We’re not looking at the fact that we haven’t beaten Wigan in four games, I see it because it’s there but it’s not important because the most important thing was putting in a performance.
“I do enjoy watching the players prove some people, and people that want to doubt us, wrong because they work extremely hard and they’re a connected group.
“But we’re certainly not motivated by that and I want to make that nice and clear. We are certainly not motivated by people saying that we can’t win at Wigan or we can’t win at Catalans. It’s about ticking those little things off if they’re there but it’s about performing, growing as a team and staying committed.”
The Hull KR boss also applauded both sets of fans for turning out in huge numbers with over 3,000 making the trip from East Hull to help contribute to an attendance of 20,218.
After paying credit to Wigan’s fans, Peters exclaimed: “3,500! And it took four and a half hours for them to get over here. I know Jack Brown came over and it took him that long. They all got here and they sung and motivated our players to want to do more.”
