Willie Peters confirms World Club Challenge ambitions after Hull KR’s Grand Final win

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has spoken on the prospect of winning the World Club Challenge after his side’s Super League Grand Final success.

The Robins’ 24-6 win at Old Trafford means they’re just the fifth different side to win a Super League title and also the fifth to win a treble, however, they will have the chance to go for four trophies when they play in the World Club Challenge next year.

It won’t quite let them win a quadruple like Wigan did, however, it would be an incredible achievement that wouldn’t have even been in any Hull KR fan’s wildest dreams until very recently.

Brisbane Broncos won the NRL Grand Final last week and off the back of that, the World Club Challenge was given the green light by NRL boss Andrew Abdo.

Speaking last week, he said: “We’ll wait and see who wins both competitions and we’ll work with the RFL to facilitate that.

“In terms of where it’s played and when it’s played we normally wait until we have both winners and we work with both clubs in terms of the scheduling.”

Hull KR out to win World Club Challenge and add fourth trophy to cabinet

Asked for his immediate reaction to the fact that the World Club Challenge is now on the agenda, Willie Peters admitted that he’d forgotten that it was even at stake, before insisting Hull KR would be ‘honoured’ to represent Super League.

Speaking in his post-match presser, he said: “Someone obviously said that after the game. Before the game, you know about it, but I forgot, to be honest.

“I was like, wow, how cool is that? We won’t be just representing Hull KR, we’re representing the Super League and the competition over here. What an honour.”

Super League sides have won the last two World Club Challenges so there would be pressure on Hull KR but Peters backed his side to be ready for whenever it’s scheduled.

The Australian said: “I know the teams that have done that in the past have done that the right way. We’ll be going out to win that game, there’s no doubt about that.

“As I said, we’ll worry about preparing for that when the time comes, but certainly we know it’s there.

“We’re obviously going to Vegas next year as well, but the World Cup challenge is something that we want to go win. There’s no doubt about that.”

With Hull KR already travelling to Las Vegas next season, there’s a feeling that if the game does go ahead then Hull KR would be hosting it at Craven Park.
