Wigan Warriors v Wakefield Trinity team news as surprise Bevan French decision made amid return of star winger

Wigan Warriors host Wakefield Trinity on Sunday with Matt Peet’s side hopeful of capitalising on Hull KR’s loss to Leeds Rhinos.

That KR loss breathes the slightest bit of hope into Wigan’s chance of retaining the League Leaders Shield as a win would move them just four points behind with four games to play, however, the more pressing reason for a win is the fact that Leeds Rhinos are now breathing down their neck.

Leeds sit level on points with Wigan and with the teams meeting in Round 27, the Warriors need to punch home the advantage of their game in hand.

Doing so against a Wakefield Trinity side who have just had a week off as a result of Salford Red Devils’ fixture cancellation will be a very tough ask.

The previous meeting between these sides saw Wakefield land a deserved 16-10 win with Wigan having both Bevan French and Luke Thompson available, neither of whom seem likely to feature on Sunday.

The big news from Matt Peet’s press conference was the injury updates regarding French and Thompson with both men set for another couple of weeks on the sidelines, however, French has once again been named to the squad.

Peet revealed Thompson to be a ‘couple of weeks (away), potentially more’, with French said to have a ‘similar time frame’ so his inclusion is somewhat of a surprise.

Jack Farrimond is also named to the 21-man squad after featuring for the reserves last week with Junior Nsemba returning after a HIA. He replaces Harvey Makin in the only change.

Wigan Warriors 21-man squad: Jai Field, Abbas Miski, Adam Keighran, Jake Wardle, Liam Marshall, Bevan French, Harry Smith, Ethan Havard, Brad O’Neill, Junior Nsemba, Liam Farrell, Kaide Ellis, Patrick Mago, Liam Byrne, Kruise Leeming, Tyler Dupree, Harvie Hill, Sam Walters, Zach Eckersley, Jack Farrimond, Jacob Douglas

Wakefield Trinity team news

Daryl Powell spoke to the media mid-week to confirm he was unsure on whether winger Tom Johnstone would feature, but the England international is named in a massive boost for Wakefield.

Neither Caleb Hamlin-Uele or Ky Rodwell will feature with Powell confirming both men’s injury woes in that presser meaning it will be Mike McMeeken and Caius Faatili leading the pack once again.

Young Ellis Lingard is also named, as is Noah High, who Trinity had planned to debut last week against Salford Red Devils.

Wakefield Trinity 21-man squad: Max Jowitt, Lachlan Walmsley, Cameron Scott, Tom Johnstone, Jake Trueman, Mike McMeeken, Liam Hood, Seth Nikotemo, Josh Griffin, Jay Pitts, Renouf Atoni, Matty Storton, Isaiah Vagana, Oliver Pratt, Mason Lino, Mathieu Cozza, Josh Rourke, Harvey Smith, Caius Faatili, Noah High, Ellis Lingard
