Wigan Warriors have named their 21-man squad for Friday night’s Super League semi-final against Leigh Leopards, despite fears the game will be cancelled.
It seems an extraordinary situation that the biggest game of the season so far might not go ahead but that’s the situation as it stands.
Wigan Warriors shared a club statement on Wednesday morning announcing that Leigh owner Derek Beaumont had informed them at 10:37 pm the night prior that the Leopards ‘do not intend to fulfil Friday’s scheduled semi-final fixture’.
Wigan went on to explain was that an allocation of either 4,600 unreserved seats or 5,400 reserved seats was offered to Leigh, almost twice as much as what the home side are obliged to offer.
Despite that, Wigan’s statement confirmed that Leigh Leopards found that arrangement ‘unacceptable’ but the hosts explained that it’s a matter of health and safety, before noting that they would continue to prepare for the game as normal.
They’ve held true to that and named their 21-man squad at midday as normal, and it’s a very strong one at that. Meanwhile, Leigh have since named their own 21-man squad the report that they do not intend to play.

Matt Peet had spoken in his presser on Tuesday confirming that Wigan were in ‘good shape’ and that’s arguably an understatement with the Warriors able to name what most would consider to be their best possible squad.
Young hooker Tom Forber is still recovering from a dislocated wrist but Wigan are otherwise very healthy and that’s highlighted in the squad they’ve named.
All those who have been carrying knocks in recent weeks are believed to be close to full fitness and all are named, including Adam Keighran, Abbas Miski and Luke Thompson, in what is an unnamed squad.
This time last year, Wigan won 38-0 in the Super League semi-finals against Leigh and they did so without captain Liam Farrell as Sam Walters stepped up and put in a Man of the Match performance.
Both men are available with Wigan having their top 24 squad numbers available barring the retired Willie Isa (14), fan number 18 and winger Jacob Douglas (23).
