Wigan Warriors have shared a positive update on the health of Zach Eckersley following Friday night’s clash with Leigh Leopards.
The outside back was stretchered off at the Brick Community Stadium after a crusher-style tackle left him needing treatment on the field. Eckersley spent 10 minutes being seen to on the pitch before being carried out of the contest and down the tunnel.
The 21-year-old, who scored a try in the 36-28 win over the Leopards, was taken directly to Salford Royal hospital for scans and for any required treatment. Thankfully, those scans have not shown any issues and Eckersley will now be cared for by the club’s medical team.
A update released by the Warriors, read: “Zach was taken to Salford Royal following last night’s game against Leigh Leopards, where he had further scans which thankfully came back clear. We thank the medical staff at The Brick Community Stadium for their work and support.
“We would also like to thank Salford Royal for their professionalism and work. Zach will now receive appropriate care from our medical team at the club, we thank the many fans for their support and concern shown for Zach.”
The tackle was made by Alec Tuitavake and was placed on report by referee Chris Kendall for the match review panel to review on Monday morning.
“There’s a potential dangerous contact but there is a lot to dissect in this kind of tackle,” the referee said during the game. “We’re unsure if it is foul play or not so it is going to go on report and it will be looked at on Monday.”
Eckersley was one of seven different try scorers for the Warriors, who had to dig deep to overcome the challenge of the Leopards on the night. Jake Wardle, Kruise Leeming, Kaide Ellis, Liam Marshall, Junior Nsemba and Adam Keighran also touched down with Jai Field and Bevan French getting two assists each.
The result was enough to see Wigan Warriors go top of Super League for a night at least, with Hull KR due to play Huddersfield Giants this evening.
