Wigan Warriors rugby union recruit Christian Wade has put his hand up for promotion to the first team following a brace of tries in the Warriors reserves fixture on Saturday afternoon.
Wigan headed to St Helens for a derby day game, with the Warriors coming away with a convincing 46-14 victory.
Two tries for Wade could put him in contention for a spot in the first team if Matt Peet feels he’s ready to step up.
However, prop Harvie Hill was less fortunate as he saw red for a tackle that saw Saints’ Joel Kilgannon stretchered off the field.
Hill was having a decent game himself, scoring Wigan’s first try and following it up with another after twenty minutes, but his afternoon was cut short in the 48th minute when he was sent off.
Wigan Warriors could call on rugby union recruit amid outside back injuries
Despite only playing now two reserve grade rugby league games, Wade could be called up to the first team sooner than expected.
With Abbas Miski out for the foreseeable future, Zach Eckersley has taken his spot on the right.
However, with Liam Marshall limping off in the final ten minutes of the Warriors defeat to Wakefield Trinity on Friday night, the door could be open for Wade’s senior rugby league debut.
Both he and youngster Jacob Douglas could be vying for the same spot, so if Marshall is ruled out, it’s up to Wigan boss Matt Peet to determine whether Wade is ready for Super League or if Douglas has more experience and would partner Jake Wardle better.
It’s a risk either way with two young wingers or giving a debut to someone who’s played just a game and a half of league, and with both scoring two tries in the game against St Helens, it could be a tough decision for Peet.
