Wigan Warriors round off incredible season with Grand Final win over St Helens

League leaders Wigan Warriors took on rivals St Helens in the Women’s Super League Grand Final at the Brick Community Stadium, with Wigan Warriors capping off an incredible year with a 16-12 win for their first Grand Final since 2018.

Wigan were seeking a second Grand Final win to cap off what has been an incredible season, whereas St Helens were seeking a first piece of silverware this year.

The sides had met in the Challenge Cup Final as Saints’ grasp on the trophy slipped when Wigan blitzed them, winning the first of their trophies so far this year. They’d also win the mid-season Nines comp and then claim the League Leaders Shield as well, with their old rivals hoping to stop the clean sweep.

Despite trailing at the break, Wigan couldn’t be stopped as they landed a famous win in front of a Women’s Super League Grand Final record crowd of 5,018.

Pre-game talk surrounded the appointment of former St Helens player Tara Jones as the referee but there was no such talk afterward with Jones having a brilliant game, blowing the final whistle on an impressive 16-12 win for the Cherry and Whites.

Wigan Warriors complete clean sweep with Super League Grand Final win

Wigan Warriors blitzed St Helens in Challenge Cup Final in June, winning 42-6, but the most recent meeting between these sides was far closer as Wigan edged it 24-20, whilst there has also been a 22-22 draw this season.

It quickly became apparent that this game would not be one-sided and it took over 20 minutes for the deadlock to be broken but it do go the way of hosts and favourites Wigan as Anna Davies scored in the corner.

Five minutes later and Dani McGifford was equalising in the very opposite corner as she scored for St Helens on the left flank and the Red Vee only built from there as Phoebe Hook scored just before half-time to make it 8-4.

After a tight opening 15 minutes to the second half, centre Molly Jones scored a quickfire double to hand Wigan a 12-8 lead and it wasn’t long until Anna Davies also had a brace as she broke from deep to score in the corner.

St Helens made it interesting as Phoebe Hook bagged her second but it was too little too late as Wigan held on to win in front of their home fans.
