Wigan Warriors punished as Mikey Lewis scores following star’s costly sin bin

Wigan Warriors hooker Brad O’Neill has been sent to the sin bin in the Super League Grand Final in a fiery opening 20 minutes that has seen Hull KR take the lead through Mikey Lewis.

The reigning champions are down to twelve with O’Neill set for ten minutes on the sideline after a dangerous tip tackle on Hull KR playmaker Tyrone May.

May ran the ball into contact and found himself tackled and tipped to land on his higher back and neck in what was a clear dangerous tackle, which eventually led to a melee.

Mikey Lewis and a number of Hull KR players moved to remove O’Neill from the tackle and that saw Wigan’s Adam Keighran steam in to push over the Robins playmaker.

What followed was a melee that was limited to pushing and shoving, however, it allowed the video referee Jack Smith to have a long look at O’Neill’s tackle with the hooker then sent to the sin bin.

Referee Liam Moore called O’Neill and Wigan Warriors captain Liam Farrell over to explain the decision, confirming it as a dangerous tackle that was worthy of ten minutes.

Whilst O’Neill shook his head, he may well be considered lucky to stay on the field at all.

Wigan were punished immediately with Mikey Lewis scoring on the next set as the playmaker danced through to score under the sticks, utilising Hull KR’s first set of six in good ball.

Lewis had earlier saved a try as he put pressure on Bevan French who dropped the ball over the line to make it 6-0.

A few minutes before that, Liam Farrell had knocked on just five metres out after being set up by Bevan French.

After 22 minutes, the score remains 6-0 with Lewis’ converted try the only score.
