Christian Wade has officially linked up with Wigan Warriors after seeing his time in rugby union come to an end. Wade penned a short-term deal with the Warriors earlier this year in a move that saw him agree to switch codes at the end of Gloucester’s Premiership season.
Gloucester fell narrowly short of a spot in the Premiership play-offs this season, despite beating Northampton Saints 41-26 on the final day of the campaign on Saturday. Wade, then, has wasted no time in linking up with the Cherry and Whites, with the winger being pictured in training just four days after his time at Kingsholm came to an end.
His arrival comes as a big boost for Wigan as they push to retain their Super League title over the second half of the season. Matt Peet’s side are currently second in the table, two points behind leaders Hull KR, but they have won their last eight games and they’ll be looking to extend that run with the help of Wade.
Christian Wade pushing for Wigan Warriors debut
Given how quickly he has made the jump over, there’ll be no questions about Wade’s fitness and if he can demonstrate an understanding of the 13-man game over the coming week and a half, it would not be a surprise to see Wade in contention for a debut on on June 14 at Huddersfield Giants.
Liam Marshall and Abbas Miksi are Peet’s first choice wingers, of course, but the latter is out injured at present and is expected to miss another month or so of action. Zach Eckersley has done a fine job in that role in Miski’s absence, too, but the temptation to throw Wade into the action will be big for Peet, if the former Buffalo Bills running back is ready.
Wade scored 12 tries for Gloucester this season with two hat-tricks coming against Bristol Bears in the Premiership. That figure includes the two tries he bagged on Saturday against the Saints as he bid farewell to Gloucester and the 15-man game on a high individually.
The 34-year-old certainly knows his way to the try line and with 91 Premiership efforts under his belt, he is currently third in the league’s all-time tryscorers list after a lengthy spell with Wasps before joining Gloucester last year.
