Wigan Warriors skipper Liam Farrell is the latest to sing the praises of star man Liam Marshall, ahead of his testimonial fixture this weekend.
Part of Marshall’s celebrations has seen his Warriors side organise a pre-season game against Hull FC, with money raised from that game going to the talented winger.
Head coach Matt Peet had nothing but positives to say about the 29-year-old, and now his skipper has echoed those statements.
Marshall made his Wigan debut in 2017, and instantly burst onto the scene, scoring 23 tries in 24 matches.
In total, he has reached 170 scores in 213 Wigan games, which ranks him as one of the most prolific try scorers in the club’s history.
The game against Hull FC will take place on Sunday and will be the final warm-up match for both the sides, with the Challenge Cup Third Round taking place the following weekend (Feb 6-8) then the season opener the weekend after that (Feb 12-15).
Captain Farrell, who himself had a testimonial game against Leeds Rhinos in 2020, gave an interview to Wigan’s club website and commented on what having Marshall in the side does for the team, and how he has developed as a player since that debut season.
He said: “Marshy joined the team as a young lad and although you don’t have much interaction at the start, he’s always been loud, vocal, and someone who’s always singing and dancing.”
“He’d only played one game but you could see the confidence he had. He’s grown over the years as a player and a person, and he’s someone who has created a lot of important memories for the Club.”
It’s not just his points scoring that is vital for the Warriors, but his yardage carries too. Farrell has seen his winger come on leaps and bounds in that area during his time as that club.
“He’s always been skilful winger who could score tries,” Farrell explained. “But he’s grown into a very tough player.
“We rely on him to be the first ball carrier out our end which sets the team on the front foot. For sure, Marshy’s added a lot of toughness to his game as that’s what wingers need now.”
The skipper concluded: “To have a Testimonial at Club is very special. You look at the personal moments Marshy’s had throughout his career, they’re standouts for the Club and town. Sunday is going to be a special occasion for Liam and his family, and I’m really excited to be a part of it.”
