Wigan Warriors boss shares Jai Field update as Abbas Miski injury addressed

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has offered an update on star full-back Jai Field after his recent surgery, with Abbas Miski’s injury also addressed.

Field was performing as arguably the best player in Super League in the early rounds until he became one of a string of full-backs to be blighted with injury, however, the Australian’s wasn’t sustained on field.

In fact, it was less of an injury and more or an unfortunate happening as the Wigan Warriors number one fell sick with what was discovered to be appendicitis, resulting in him having his appendix removed.

A statement from Wigan at the time put the expected recovery timeline at ‘four to six weeks’ and two weeks on from that statement, head coach Matt Peet has spoken to Serious About Rugby League’s sister site Wigan Today.

“Jai’s alright,” Peet confirmed, adding: “In terms of what the operation was, it was a serious one in terms of the way they had to go in and the incisions they had to make, but he is a few weeks off yet.

“We won’t rush him because we need to make sure that when he does come back, his body is in the optimum condition for the season ahead, not just getting him back for one-off games, so he is way off training with the team yet.”

Wigan Warriors boss shares Abbas Miski update

Another man who is out injured and in fact hasn’t featured at all this season is winger Abbas Miski with the Lebanon international still recovering from post-season surgery.

The winger suffered a torn hamstring in the Grand Final defeat to Hull KR whilst he missed periods of the season due to a knee injury as well, but there’s no return date in mind.

Peet confirmed: “There will be no timeframe on it for the time being. He had that hamstring operation in pre-season, but he is still dealing with quite serious knee issues as well, so most of the work he has been doing is with the physios at the moment, and we are just taking it week by week.”

The Wigan boss again underlined the fact the club won’t rush Miski back when fielding a question on whether he was confident that Miski would play in 2026.

“I don’t see why he wouldn’t be,” Peet responded. “He is working hard, but we certainly won’t be rushing him.”
