Wigan Warriors boss sends classy Hull KR message and addresses star’s disciplinary record after latest sin bin

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet spoke after his side’s win over Hull FC, offering praise to rivals Hull KR and addressing disciplinary concerns regarding Adam Keighran.

Speaking to Sky Sports after his side’s comprehensive 34-6 win over Hull FC, Peet showed his class when he made a point of ending the interview by congratulating World Club Challenge winners Hull KR.

Champions in 2024 with a win over Penrith, Wigan know what it takes to beat the NRL’s best and having faced Hull KR in last year’s Grand Final for a spot in this game, Peet ensured he gave the Robins their flowers.

He said: “Can I just pass on congratulations to Hull KR for what they did the other night. I think for myself, all the players, everyone at the club, it was great to see, they were awesome and I’m proud for Super League.”

Those comments came after he’d watched his side see off Rovers’ rivals Hull FC quite comfortably but Peet admitted that all he was focused on was a win.

Asked about the performance, he said: “Yeah, I’ve got to be pleased, I would have taken any sort of result driving down to the game tonight so I’m pleased with the result.

“Aspects of the performance could certainly be better, and will be, but yeah, I would have taken it on the way here.”

Where Wigan Warriors won the game

One of the reasons why Wigan had so much success was that they took it to Hull FC physically with the game won after 10 minutes with the Warriors racing into a 12-0 lead and leaving their opponents stunned.

Asked about his pack’s early impact, Peet said: “We did some good things, it’s important that we continue to get better and we don’t get too carried away. Hull FC are missing quite a bit, but no, there were some good signs, both sides of the ball, particularly the first half.”

Having led 24-0 at the half, they failed to keep Hull FC under the pump all match with the Black and Whites the better side for the final five minutes and that saw ex-Wigan man Harvie Hill cross over.

Peet did note the late lapse, stating: “You can always dissect things where you could have posted more points, but I thought we could have finished the game better. Not so much scoring more points, just a little bit more discipline with where we turned the ball over ad we put ourselves under a little bit of pressure.”

Adam Keighran’s sin bin assessed

Part of that pressure came from Adam Keighran’s sin bin with the centre sent for 10 minutes for the second week in a row as he caught Will Pryce with his shoulder.

“I’ve not watched it in great detail, but I feel for Adam, he’s working hard to be better,” Peet said of the incident, before explaining that it’s something the Australian has worked on.

“He made a mistake last week, we are working hard on it, and he is. He’s disappointed there.

“Without commenting on that particular one, there’s been a few and it’s something he wants to get out of his game, but he’s making breakneck decisions as you see with these edge players.

“He’s got to get them right, he has a duty to get them right, but he’s also got to defend with a bit of toughness as well, so it’s a line we all tread.”

Keighran could well spend the weekend sweating Monday’s disciplinary panel as he sits on 1.75 points, meaning a Grade C charge would result in a ban. It’s worth noting that last week’s offence, which was similar, only earned him a Grade B charge so that is unlikely.
