Wigan Warriors boss explains what made him ‘proud’ v Catalans Dragons amid injury latest on Sam Walters and Luke Thompson

Matt Peet admits the way his Wigan Warriors side performed without the ball at Catalans Dragons left him feeling ‘proud’.

The Cherry and Whites thumped Catalans Dragons 48-0 at the Stade Gilbert Brutus on Saturday night, running in eight tries and keeping the home side, who parted with Steve McNamara earlier this week, scoreless. They didn’t have it all their own way in Perpignan, despite what the one-sided scoreline might suggest, and there were periods when the Warriors had to pull together to rebuff the Dragons.

They did so admirably, though, and Peet will be cherishing the nil most as he boards the plane back to the north west of England.

“I’m made up with the lads,” Peet told Sky Sports. “We had very much a defensive mindset coming here today and we needed to with the way we’ve been leaking points.

“It was probably just the kind of game we needed in terms of having to defend. We lost a couple of front-rowers as well but I love the togetherness of the group.

“We can’t worry too much about where Catalans are at but we’ve still been leaking too many points. We still had to turn up for one another particularly in the early stages when they were full of energy and we had quite a lot of goalline defence to do.

“Some of the cover defence and when things don’t go to plan, turning up for each other, it makes me really proud.”

The win came at a cost for the Warriors, though, with Sam Walters and Luke Thompson picking up issues in the first half at the Stade Gilbert Brutus. Thompson left the field after 13 minutes due to a rib injury, while Walters was forced off late in the first half with a lower leg issue.

However, Peet couldn’t offer much more information than that when asked about the pair after the game.

“It’s too early to say really,” he said. “Luke did something around his ribs and Sam was lower leg so we’ll find out more.”
