Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet has revealed why he has rotated his side for this week’s Super League match with Hull KR.
Peet shocked the majority of fans when the 21-man squads were released at noon, with the Wigan boss making plenty of changes in a squad majorly filled with academy and reserve grade players.
This will allow the first-teamers to have an extra week of recovery ahead of the Challenge Cup Final, where they will play the Robins at Wembley in their third meeting in a final in as many seasons.
Speaking to the press ahead of Thursday’s game, Peet said: “As I mentioned at the weekend, it’s player-by-player.
“We’ve got to be intelligent around individuals, whether those are lads that are carrying bangs or who have suspension points looming. We’re trying to strike that balance.”
Brad O’Neill, Harry Smith and Sam Walters were all one charge away from a suspension, so their omissions make more sense, but it’s fair to say barely anyone was expecting the level of change that Peet has made.
Commenting on opponents KR, who have gone as strong as they possibly can this week, and the fact they play them two weeks in a row, the Wigan coach said: “It’s two big games in a row against the same opposition.
“This is something we knew was always on the cards since the fixtures came out – having one of the big games of the year before the Challenge Cup Final.
“It’s something we’ve been planning for since before the season started. Both teams face the same challenge.”
“Any coach that’s been in this position knows it’s a challenge, but it’s a challenge you want. It’d be very disappointing if we were talking about going to this and then having a week off.
“Both sets of coaches will be excited that we’ve got this opportunity.”
Wigan have seen an upturn in form as of late, and after losing four straight league games, bounced back against Bradford Bulls before winning comfortably against St Helens and Leeds Rhinos.
“The connection in our defence has been getting better and better, so that’s something we want to keep building on,” Peet said when asked about his side’s improved results.
“As I mentioned, looking after the ball and getting the foundations of a good performance with our kicking game. The things in and around that we can own.
“Sometimes if you don’t get them right, you don’t give yourself a chance to win.”
