Wigan send message, Will Pryce injury fears, silly sin bins and other Wigan Warriors v Hull FC talking points

Wigan Warriors put in a mightily impressive display as they beat Hull FC 34-6 at the Brick Community Stadium with a professional performance.

The game was won in the first 10 minutes with Sam Walters and Zach Eckersley scoring before Sam Eseh pounced on a mistake to make it 18-0 after 20 minutes.

Jai Field then punished a Will Pryce error after the full-back kicked out on the full and Field’s partner in crime Bevan French scored four minutes after the restart to put the game beyond any doubt.

Field doubled up late on before both sides exchanged sin bins with Harvie Hill then scoring against his old club, however, the game was marred by a late Will Pryce injury.

Here are all the talking points after Wigan’s 34-6 hammering of Hull FC.

Wigan Warriors verus Hull FC talking points

Wigan put Super League on notice

Hull FC were awful and we will get to that, but Wigan Warriors didn’t allow them anything in this game. Matt Peet’s side perhaps slowed up in the second half and they saw their clean sheet wiped out late on after a silly Adam Keighran sin bin and a Hull FC surge.

Outside of that final five minutes, Wigan put on a performance that will remind Super League of just how impressive they can be. With Leigh next up on Thursday, they could make a true statement by beating their local rivals.

FC’s miserable 48 hours continue

Hull FC fans watched their rivals Hull KR win the World Club Challenge in the Black and Whites’ MKM Stadium on Thursday night, something they will never live down until they win their own World Club Challenge, and tonight just hammered home how far away they are.

A defeat to Wigan is understandable and even acceptable, however, the nature of this loss was awful. Outworked, outplayed and outscored by a whopping 34-6. This hammering capped off a torrid 48 hours for the Black and Whites, made worse by the late injury to Will Pryce.

Pryce injury fears

That injury came with just minutes to go and there was an immediate sense that it was a bad one with the full-back evidently upset over the incident, and left holding his knee.

Pryce’s injury history will automatically have him fearing the worst, particularly after watching Blake Taafee suffer a season-ending injury against Wigan in round one. Fingers crossed, Pryce comes through scans fine.

Slow start costs Hull FC

A key reason why the scoreline was allowed to blow out so wide was the fact that the game as a contest was done after just 10 minutes with Wigan racing into a 12-0 lead.

Both tries came on their defensive left edge as Lewis Martin and Davy Litten were toyed with by Zach Eckersley, who first tapped back Harry Smith’s kick for Sam Walters before he scored his own.

They were perhaps fortunate that Jai Field’s try after 13 minutes was disallowed.

Soft disallowed try questioned

Questions were asked over that ‘No Try’ decision with former Hull FC man Paul Cooke leading that on commentary, labelling it ‘soft’. The ball was shifted left with Jai Field finding a gap, however, it was deemed that the reason why that gap was so big was due to Liam Farrell taking out Will Pryce.

Cooke disagreed: “I think it’s soft, I think it’s really soft. I think Will Pryce plays for it and he knows that Farrell is on his outside shoulder so he goes to ground.

“I don’t think there is any way he’s stopping Jai Field anyway. To the letter of the law, it is an obstruction but it’s a real soft one isn’t it?”

Injuries costing FC already

They’re not the only club to have injuries already but it’s evident that Hull’s injury are harming them massively with the likes of Herman Ese’se and John Asiata among their biggest absent stars.

Jake Arthur and James Bell will also return soon but Ligi Sao will miss Friday’s game against York due to suspension, however, on the basis of performances like this it’s hard to see how those returnees can change much. With Will Pryce perhaps facing some time out, those injuries could be set to worsen.

Liam Knight’s silly two minutes and Adam Keighran’s moment of madness

Placed on report early on for a shot on Kaide Ellis, Liam Knight summed up a bad night by earning himself a trip to the sin bin and a possible suspension to boot.

He first gave away a penalty whilst in possession as he berated the referee and then, in an apparent act of frustration, he tipped Sam Walters in the tackle. That saw him sin binned with Knight then offering a thumbs up and a smirk as he walked off the field.

As for Keighran, who had been incredible all game, the centre put in a lazy and ill-disciplined shoulder charge late on to land himself in the sin bin for a second week running. Such acts are going to eventually lead to a ban and will leave Matt Peet scratching his head as to why Keighran felt the need to put the shot on Pryce.
