After a Championship rugby league match was delayed by over an hour on account of injury, there’s a key injury update.
Widnes Vikings’ Jake Maizen was stretchered off after copping a blow to the head in his side’s game against Doncaster on Sunday afternoon.
The Italian international received treatment from doctors at the game but that meant that the game could not continue, given that no doctor was present to attend to other possible injuries.
Widnes provided a minor update midway through the game on Sunday as they confirmed that play had restarted and explained that Maizen was stable.
When play did restart, Doncaster’s Edene Gebbie was immediately sent off for his shot on Maizen and the game then descended into chaos as Suaia Matagi was sent from the field just a couple of minutes later.
Despite that, 11-man Doncaster extended their lead and would eventually win 20-16, keeping themselves within one point of the play-offs and leaving Widnes five points adrift.
Widnes Vikings share Jake Maizen injury update
Whilst the result wasn’t positive for Widnes, they could offer a positive update on Jake Maizen and one that all rugby league fans will have been happy to hear.
Posting late on Sunday evening, the Vikings took to social media confirming: “We’re pleased to share a positive update on Jake Maizen following the incident during today’s match which saw play suspended as he was stretchered from the field.
“Jake has undergone medical assessment and we can confirm there is no neck fracture, which is a huge relief. He has, however, sustained a concussion and some muscular strain in his neck.
“As per concussion protocols, Jake will take the necessary time away from training and competition to ensure a full and safe recovery. We’ll continue to support him throughout his rehabilitation and provide further updates as needed.
“We thank everyone for their concern and well wishes for Jake.”
Maizen signed for Widnes midway through the 2025 season with the Australian-born back having previously played for Whitehaven and Halifax Panthers in England. He also took part in the delayed 2021 Rugby League World Cup, representing Italy where he scored a hat-trick against Scotland.
