Why Kevin Sinfield could be ineligible for a knighthood as Piers Morgan backs Sir Kev

There are again prominent calls for Kevin Sinfield to be knighted with famous face Piers Morgan backing the campaign but that might not impact the honours this year as the MND campaigner is reportedly ineligible.

Kevin Sinfield has just finished his sixth challenge to help raise money to combat Motor Neurone Disease with the Leeds Rhinos legend finishing his efforts at his former ground of Headingley on Sunday.

Not a man who rests on his laurels, Sinfield has already confirmed details of his seventh and final challenge with the former Super League man set to finish his final challenge at the 2026 Super League Grand Final.

Those details were confirmed by Rugby League Commercial with Kevin Sinfield set to start in Hull in late September 2026, taking in all 12 English-based Super League clubs, as well as as many other clubs, before finishing at Old Trafford.

It’s similar to how he finished the 2022 challenge at the final of the Rugby League World Cup, also held at Old Trafford, and despite these incredible yearly efforts, it’s thought that Kevin Sinfield is ineligible for a knighthood.

Kevin Sinfield hits new fundraising goal as calls for knighthood grow

At least for now he is ineligible, as it’s been reported that per protocol, honours cannot be upgraded within three years of them being awarded.

With Kevin Sinfield earning a CBE in 2024, it’s thought that the rugby league legend will have to wait at least another 12 months for his well-deserved knighthood.

It would perhaps be fitting if he finally was knighted in the aftermath of the final challenge, however, many would argue that it was far too late.

One of those calling for Sinfield to become Sir Kevin Sinfield is journalist Piers Morgan, who took to social media to back the Daily Mirror’s campaign to ‘make him Sir Kev’.

Posting on X, Morgan said: “Totally agree with today;s Mirror splash headline. Few more deserving candidates for a knighthood than Kevin Sinfield after another astonishing achievement from this remarkable man who does do much for @mndassoc”

Morgan also asked his followers to donate to Sinfield’s fundraising page, which has surpassed £1.3 million at the time of writing, and can be found here.

He won’t be given an honour because he’s a Northern oik, from the forbidden hated code, he has no place among the ranks of the Establishment as they see it! It’s purely and simply class bias and oppression. He doesn’t need it, he has the respect ofthe people who matter, the ordinary people who are touched by his efforts and commitment, by his genuine love for his friend, by his decency, and that is worth far more than any mere bauble or gewgaw grudgingly dispensed by an out of touch elite. Name the last Royal to attend a Rugby League match. For my money I’d stop playing the National Anthem, replace it with Jerusalem or do the Sex Pistols version.
