Sam Burgess has dismissed suggestions his Warrington Wolves side are still feeling the effects of their defeat at Wembley earlier this month.
The Wolves have lost back to back games since their agonising Challenge Cup final loss to Hull KR at the start of the month, falling short at Leeds Rhinos then at home to Huddersfield Giants this afternoon. Warrington were the favourites to claim the result, but they were second best from the start as Luke Robinson’s side managed to claim just their second Super League win of the season.
Warrington did launch a late comeback as Toby King and Jake Thewlis got over inside the final few months to build on Marc Sneyd’s effort in the first half, but the game was gone, with the Wolves ultimately losing 24-16. Burgess could have few complaints about his side’s performance, with the head coach lamenting a lack of confidence from his players.
But he took exception to the notion of a lasting Wembley hangover impacting the Wolves.
Sam Burgess on Warrington Wolves defeat
“I don’t quite understand that talk,” Burgess hit back when asked about the Cup final. “I think you can give them a week, but we have to move on. I really can’t sit and look at that anymore we have to move on from that excuse.”
On the showing, Burgess added: “Yeah it was a disappointing performance really. There were parts of the game that were OK, we controlled a lot of areas but essentially when it mattered we were poor.”
Asked for a reason for the subpar display, he said: “I’m trying to figure that one out, a bit of lack of confidence at the moment and you can see it in the performance.
“Areas were good, we gave the intercept away in the first half that hurt us. We just have to get some more resilience in our defence, its not like we can’t do it but it’s our attitude towards it is not where it needs to be.”
Warrington take on Hull FC, Salford Red Devils and Catalans Dragons next and the expectation is that they’ll be able to bounce back to winning ways during that run. Burgess insists they have to look at themselves though, rather than the opposition over the weeks to come.
“We were possibly favourites today so it doesn’t mean too much, regardless of who we’ve got we have to look at ourselves more than anything else,” he said.
