Wigan Warriors were blitzed 24-6 by Hull KR in the Super League Grand Final and head coach Matt Peet has given his initial reaction.
Despite putting Hull KR under the pump for the first 15 minutes, Wigan could not capitalise with the Warriors wasting two huge opportunities, including when Bevan French dropped one over the line.
The game then turned as hooker Brad O’Neill got sent to the sin bin for a tip tackle on Tyrone May and that marked a major momentum change, with Man of the Match Mikey Lewis scoring from the next set.
Former Wigan man Joe Burgess would score the second soon after and despite Wigan scoring the next six points to make it interesting, Hull KR then responded with a penalty and then Jez Litten’s try, before sealing it with another Joe Burgess score late on.
It means Wigan’s grip on silverware finally ends with the club ceding three of their four trophies this season and head coach Matt Peet has had his say.
Matt Peet reacts after Wigan Warriors lose Grand Final
Speaking post-match on Sky Sports, Peet was asked if errors were the deciding factor in his sides defeat, something he agreed with.
“Yeah, definitely. I think to get ourselves back in the game then we had to look after the ball a tad better and we failed to do so,” he explained.
“Credit to the pressure that Hull KR were putting on us defensively in the same way that they did to us at our place a few months ago. I think all the credit goes to them tonight and the night belongs to them.
“I remain proud of my players and we’ll just work hard at the end of tonight.”
Asked what he’d said to his players, Peet reiterated: “I just said that, my pride in them and love for them doesn’t depend on the performance tonight. It’s irrelevant,
“I know what we have as men, as players, and I know what they do for this club so I just said that none of them will apologise for anything that happened out there tonight.
“We’ll handle it the right way, we’ll keep moving forward because that that really matter to us, whether it’s our friends, family, supporters, they don’t stop watching because we’ve got beat. They watch how we handle this so it’s very important.”
Paying final credit to Hull KR, he said: “To do what they’ve done, it doesn’t go to one man. They deserve everything they get.”
