‘Tough to watch’ – What Matt Peet said after Wigan Warriors’ fourth Super League loss in a row

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has given his verdict after his side’s fourth straight Super League loss following the defeat to Warrington Wolves.

The Cherry and Whites lost 23-6 on the road with Zach Eckersley’s breakaway try Wigan’s only score but it wasn’t enough as Josh Thewlis and Albert Hopoate both scored a brace, with Marc Sneyd adding seven points from the boot, including his 50th Super League drop goal.

Wigan were without first-choice halves Bevan French and Harry Smith and they quickly saw stand-in Adam Keighran moved out as a Liam Marshall injury caused a reshuffle with young loose forward Taylor Kerr stepping in to partner Jack Farrimond.

That inexperience in the halves and the missing players are major points of mitigation but that didn’t stop Matt Peet expressing disappointment at his side’s performance at the Halliwell Jones Stadium

Initially labelling it ‘tough to watch at some times’, Peet did express pride as he spoke to Sky Sports post-match: “I’m quite proud of the effort from the players but there were moments that we’d wish we had again.

“Both teams are in similar situations stretched positionally and ultimately Warrington managed it better and we did execute it better than we did.

“We didn’t take out opportunities but I thought the effort was start to finish.”

Wigan Warriors boss addresses red flags at club as injury worry revealed

Asked what the red flags were currently at Wigan Warriors that have contributed to such a torrid losing run, Peet explained that the loss of Liam Marshall early on which triggered a half-back reshuffle didn’t help, though he still called for better execution.

Peet said: “It’s hard to say. I mean last week there were aspects of our defence that we worked on in the week and then we tried to get our spine bedded in but has to change that again after losing Liam (Marshall) early in the game.

“There have been red flags in other games around effort and aptitude. I thought that was there tonight so now we’ll probably look at our execution.

“The thing is we can’t have lapses in effort and aptitude any week because that puts pressure on you but thought we were at it tonight but we needed to execute better and control the game better the following few years.”

On the fact it is now four losses in a row, he admitted: “It’s concerning. It’s difficult but to be honest when you are winning you’re still concerned with trying to improve your team. The process is the same. It’s just a little more difficult when you’ve got different faces in different positions.

“There are lads missing, we get one back tonight and then we lose a couple. I know that’s the same for every team but it’s probably about sticking together as the players, the staff, the supporters and we’ll work our way through it as we’ve done in the past.”

On Marshall’s aforementioned injury, Peet confirmed it to be a hamstring concern with the winger set for scans but the coach warned: “Fingers crossed but they don’t tend to be good.”
