John Cartwright believes Hull FC were the architects of their own downfall on Saturday as they lost 24-10 to Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
The Black and Whites were well beaten by Sam Burgess’ side and while they did score tries through Harvey Barron and Aidan Sezer, it was arguably one of their worst performances of the season so far.
Hull made 11 errors in the game, with plenty of those coming while attempting to come out of their own half, gifting Warrington possession and the platform to assert themselves. On top of that, according to the Super League stats, they missed 34 tackles.
Indeed, Cartwright could have no complaints about the result with Hull failing to do enough to trouble the home side, who had lost five of their last six league games prior to the clash with Hull.
Hull FC boss slams his side’s errors
“They were full of energy and we gave them too many opportunities,” Cartwright admitted when speaking to Sky Sports. “It was similar to the Castleford game a few weeks ago but I think we were worse.
“Coming out of our own end I think we broke a record for the amount of tackles we had to make on our try line. If you want to find a positive our goal line defence for most of that second half was really really good but you can’t win games by just coughing the ball up so much.
“You can play games in the driving rain and win but we get to where our target is and play in perfect conditions tonight and we come up with just some really poor errors. Not something you expect from a Super League side.”
Hull remain in sixth, but the loss ensures they missed the chance to give themselves some breathing space in the play-offs.
“We just have to stop giving the opposition more chances,” he added. “We’re a side that’s building and we’ve built pretty much from the word go and in a lot of areas we’re in a really good place but I’ll say it again, we turned over too much ball coming off our own line and they’re too good a side, their halves just took over.”
