Castleford Tigers boss Danny McGuire called Hull KR Super League’s ‘benchmark’ after watching his side be beaten 48-0 by the Challenge Cup winners on Thursday night.
The Tigers entered the contest on a high after beating Hull FC last time out, but they were never given a sniff by the Robins, who were dominant from start to finish at The Jungle. Rovers scored with just a couple of minutes on the clock through former Tiger Jack Broadbent and that set the tone for what was a one-sided contest.
KR scored nine unanswered tries on the night, with Broadbent, Tom Davies and Noah Booth all bagging braces, while Peta Hiku, Jai Whitbread and Arthur Mourgue also got over the line.
Castleford went close to scoring on a couple of occasions with Zac Cini going closest before dropping the ball over the line. Ultimately, though, the clash was as one-sided as Super League games get and McGuire comes away from it
knowing his side have plenty to work on still.
Danny McGuire on Castleford Tigers defeat
“I thought Hull KR were very good, they’re just the benchmark for everybody at the minute and the way they went about it tonight, on the back of the Challenge Cup, it’s impressive. We just couldn’t find a way to get in the game,” McGuire told Sky Sports.
“We had some moments where we stuck in there but it’s disappointing because I thought we did some really good things this week and we were really positive but we’re not where we need to be. We need to keep working hard, we’ve got to finding a way and doing the right things in practise during the week.
“It’s disappointing, we didn’t quite do some of the things we wanted to do. I thought our start was poor and KR have got too many good players, they take advantage of it and then we start to panic and make rash decisions and ultimately we were well beaten in the end.
“We had some moments where I thought we were OK but not enough of them. Physically they played the ball on their terms and we played the ball on their terms so we could never get momentum and every time they went to an edge they looked like they’d cause us trouble.
“We’ve got some things to fix up. I thought we were pretty well beaten and there’s nothing I can say, Hull KR were deserved winners and much the better team.
“The consistency is something we’re looking for and we can’t get it at the minute, it seems to be one good, one bad, one good and good teams play well every week and KR are showing that. We have some improvement in us but we’ve got to keep working.”
