Sam Burgess believes Warrington Wolves’ win over Hull FC could be the catalyst they need as they bid to rescue their season. The Wolves beat the Black and Whites 24-10 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday to claim their first win since their Challenge Cup final loss to Hull KR earlier this month.
Josh Thewlis got the Wire moving in the right direction before his brother Jake got in on the action on the other wing. Hull hit back with two tries to make things interesting going into the break, but Sam Powell and Lachlan Fitzgibbon efforts just after the break made the difference in Cheshire.
It was a win that will bolster Warrington’s confidence enormously, but it was also one that effectively kept their play-off hopes alive. Had Warrington lost to Hull, they would have been seven points off the top six but as it is now, they are three points behind and almost within touching distance with 11 games still to be played.
The Wolves are still very much in the hunt for a play-off spot then and Burgess was delighted to see his side bounce back with a response after such a disappointing few weeks.
Warrington Wolves boss hails win over Hull FC
“I was happy with the game and I thought we controlled most parts of it really well,” Burgess told Sky Sports. “I was just happy to get our defence back in order.
“I thought our senior players stood up, George and Duft were great again today, two of our senior guys did a good job for us so I’m happy with that.
“We felt in control and we felt at points we weren’t on the back off too much pressure as well so we were pretty disappointed with the tries we conceded. We’ll take a lot of of the game, a lot we can work on and improve on but we had to get a win, we needed it.
“My hopes never died, my hope is always there and my belief is always there. I know what side we’ve got in there, I know who the players are and I know what we can do. We’ll take a lot of confidence out of that, we needed that first one and we’ll be back up and away.”
