South Sydney Rabbitohs boss Wayne Bennett has shared his thoughts on former St Helens halfback Lewis Dodd after recalling him for just his fourth NRL appearance of the season.
Dodd has fallen down the pecking order at the Rabbitohs, with Bennett opting to play youngsters Jamie Humphreys and Jayden Sullivan ahead of him.
Souths have also announced the signing of 22-year-old Jonah Glover on a two-year deal from next season, so it looks like Dodd’s days at the Bunnies could be over.
With another young halfback on the way, rumours are circulating that Dodd could be offered to other NRL clubs or even a move back home, despite only being one year into a three-year deal.
Speaking to the Australian media, coach Bennett discussed the English halfback’s progress and where he thinks he fits into his current side.
Bennett said: “We have had conversations and I have told him where he is at and what the opportunities are going forward at Souths.
“It all comes back to showing his ability.”
What’s next for Lewis Dodd? Fight for a Rabbitohs spot, make a move to another NRL club or return to Super League?
Dodd joined the Rabbitohs in the off-season but has struggled to make the first-team squad, playing mostly in the reserves side in the NSW Cup.
However, with injuries to Jayden Sullivan and Cody Walker, alongside Latrell Mitchell being away with the NSW State of Origin squad, Dodd has been drafted into the side, with a spot on the bench.
It looked likely that he would make just his second NRL start; however, Bennett has chosen to move Jack Wighton from the centres into the halves to partner Jamie Humphreys.
The club have also signed Jonah Glover in the halves for the 2026 and 2027 season, casting further doubt over Dodd’s future.
The Australian press believes he’s not good enough for the NRL, citing his performances in the NSW Cup as not being particularly good either, with The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield stating: “I don’t think there’s a lot of confidence in the team around his football.”
