Warrington Wolves star explains simple change from 2025 as ‘unbelievable’ teammate hailed

Warrington Wolves made it two wins from two on Saturday as they defeated Wakefield Trinity and Marc Sneyd has now explained what’s changed from their disappointing 2025 season.

The 2024 campaign marked Sam Burgess’ first season in charge with Warrington placing third but they fell off massively last year, failing to make the play-offs as they finished a distant eighth.

Despite playing a game less than most of the league, Wire sit inside the top six after winning two from two to start the year and whilst it’s early doors, the signs are positive.

Their 27-16 win over Wakefield Trinity was hard-fought, something that will have pleased Sam Burgess as well as Man of the Match Marc Sneyd.

Speaking post-match on Sky Sports, the playmaker admitted: “They probably stuck to a plan better than we thought they would. We completed really high and did all the little nitty-gritty things really well but we didn’t quite get the points on the scoreboard in a way that we expected to.

“When you look at the stats, we didn’t get the points that we expected to but winning in the way that we won, where we stuck in there and dug in, it’s early in the season and we’ve managed to go two from two.

“We can’t complain. We’ve got a lot of things that we can be better at. We’re happy but with a long way to go.”

Warrington Wolves man assesses Wakefield win

The round one win over St Helens showed control as well with Wire holding off some heavy Saints pressure in the second-half to come through the other side, leading Sneyd to be asked what, if anything, had changed from 2025.

The 35-year-old admitted: “Not much, we’re looking after the ball better. It’s a simple sport when you break it down and I don’t think it will ever change in that sense. The team that looks after the ball the best and builds field position the most is probably going to end up on the right side of it.

“Last year we put too much ball down and we didn’t complete well enough. That’s what we’re looking to do, we’re looking to build and we’ve had two games where we’ve done not a bad job of it but there’s still a long way to go.”

Warrington made just six errors compared to Wakefield’s nine, whilst Sneyd also controlled the game with his boot, executing 17 of Warrington’s 23 kicks including for the try assist to Josh Smith.

As well as the grit of the game, Wire’s spine is firing and Sneyd was sure to pay his one, six and nine plenty of credit with hooker Danny Walker, who Sam Burgess hailed, labelled as ‘unbelievable’.

Sneyd said: “I’m the older one in that spine by some way but if I can get them middles going in the right direction and creating quick rucks then we’ll go a long way this year, I think.

“Danny Walker is unbelievable out of nine and Cai is so fresh, he’s not scared of anything. He charges that ball in like a prop forward and he’s taking some whacks but he gets up. Then obviously George is George, if you put him in the right spot then he’ll do some damage.

“We’ve started pretty well but we’re only two games in so we’ll see where we end up.”
