Warrington Wolves signing assesses injury return as George Williams’ impact hailed

NRL signing Albert Hopoate made his debut for Warrington Wolves on Friday night, making his first appearance since March of 2025.

Hopoate ruptured his ACL playing for Canberra Raiders in the New South Wales Cup with that being the third ACL injury in the 24-year-old’s career, however, he made his playing return on Friday night and played a full 80 minutes as Warrington beat Sheffield Eagles 34-6.

The centre even got on the score sheet with Sam Burgess speaking highly of the recruit, explaining that Wire may not see the best of him for a few weeks as he takes time to find his form following such a lengthy lay-off.

“It’s good to get the first game out of the way,” the 24-year-old said post-match when speaking to Warrington Wolves media.

“I didn’t expect much from myself, I just wanted to do my job and make the boys and my family proud. I’m just happy I got through the game safely.”

Warrington Wolves signing hails outside back partner

Hopoate looks to be in line to start next week in the Super League season opener for Warrington when they host St Helens, a game that he’s keen for.

He said: “I’m excited to see what the atmosphere is like here over in England and can’t wait to experience it with the boys.”

As for his first game back in such a long time, he admitted: “The first 10 minutes I was blowing but it was good to get the lungs and the legs going again, it’s good prep for next week and hopefully a good season.”

Hopoate also spoke out on the combination that he’s developed with Josh Thewlis and George Williams on the edge, paying credit to Williams for his assist whilst speaking on the impact the pair have had so far.

“It’s amazing playing inside JT and outside George, they make my job easier,” he explained.

“They’re freaks and I can’t wait to keep playing alongside them.”
