Warrington Wolves forward agrees new contract in huge boost for Sam Burgess

Warrington Wolves have confirmed that Australian forward Luke Yates has committed his future to the club after signing a new contract.

Yates’ original deal was due to expire at the end of the season, but he has sealed his future early in the season, and will stay at the Halliwell Jones Stadium until the end of 2028.

Joining the club in May 2024 from Huddersfield Giants, Yates has been a consistent part of the Warrington pack, and has been utilised in both the front row and at loose forward.

He was given the starting number eight jersey for the 2026 season, moving from 13, in a move that also indicates where boss Sam Burgess sees him playing.

A 25-time NRL player, Yates made his professional debut in 2017 for Newcastle Knights, and stayed there for two seasons before joining London Broncos in 2019.

The 30-year-old has stayed in Super League ever since, and after leaving the Broncos at the end of that season, moved to Salford Red Devils for a year, where he reached the Challenge Cup Final.

He joined Huddersfield Giants from 2021 to 2024, where again he reached the Cup Final, but was unsuccessful, as they lost out to late Liam Marshall try that gave Wigan Warriors the trophy.

Joining Wire in a mid-season switch, he has gone on to make 40 appearances in Primrose and Blue, and will be looking to add to that total with his new terms.

Commenting on his new deal, Yates said: “It’s nice to get it sorted and get some clarity on my future.

“I’ve absolutely loved my time here, and I can’t wait to keep it rolling.

“I love the club, I love the group, especially the group that we’ve got this year. It was easy to commit to [a new contract] with the things we’ve put in place.

“The vibe around the group is good and I enjoy coming to work every day, so that’s a big bonus.”

Wolves boss Burgess added: “It’s really positive news for the club that ‘Yatesy’ has extended for another two years. He’s a great character amongst the group, a strong leader and role model to have in our culture.”
