Warrington Wolves’ play-off hopes suffered a dent at the weekend with the shock loss go Castleford Tigers but they’ve now confirmed a loan signing which will bolster them for the final eight rounds.
Defeat at the Jungle left Wire three points adrift and left Sam Burgess questioning referee decisions.
The game also saw him lose forward Jordy Crowther to a dislocated elbow but the club have signed an immediate replacement, who also brings much-needed firepower to a pack that has struggled in recent weeks.
NRL side Parramatta Eels have confirmed that Ryan Matterson will join Warrington on loan for the remainder of the season in an immediate move.
It’s reminiscent of the loan move that England international John Bateman made for the latter half of the 2024 season.
Who is Warrington Wolves’ new signing Ryan Matterson?
Confirmation of Matterson’s loan move to join Wire came from his parent club Parramatta initially.
They announced: “Parramatta Eels have released Ryan Matterson from his playing contract for the 2025 season effective immediately, paving the way for an opportunity at Warrington Wolves in the English Super League.
“Matterson remains contracted to the Eels for the 2026 season.”
Parramatta Eels General Manager of Football Mark O’Neill said: “This is an opportunity for Ryan to explore new challenges and broaden his professional experience in the English Super League.'”
Matterson, 30, has been with the Eels since 2020 and has racked up almost 100 appearances for them having previously featured for Sydney Roosters and Wests Tigers.
He earned a New South Wales call-up in 2022 but has found games harder to come by in 2025, playing just four times for the Eels.
The last of those came on June 1st when he came off the bench but he’d previously been playing loose forward in the New South Wales Cup.
He would slot straight into that position at Warrington or offer impact from the bench with the Australian having time to settle at the Wolves before their next game, which comes away to Leigh on August 1st.
