Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess has spoken after his side’s “disappointing” loss to Wakefield Trinity with Wire played off the park for almost the entirety of the 80 minutes.
Wakefield ran out as 40-10 victors with Warrington’s 10 points coming in a two-minute flurry late in the first half, however, Sam Burgess’ side could not carry that into the second half.
In fact, Arron Lindop knocked on from the restart and Wakefield scored their fourth try to make it 24-10 and seemingly kill off any hope that Warrington Wolves had harboured of a comeback.
It marks the second time this season that Warrington have been beaten by Wakefield and Burgess was understandably disappointed with the performance, as were his players he revealed.
“It was disappointing, it looked nothing like us last week,” he explained to Sky Sports.
“We’ve got a few guys in there who are pretty disappointed and rightly so. We’ve got Hull KR on Friday night so there’s not too long to be sad about it.”
Warrington Wolves boss bemoans “flat” performance
The game against Hull KR will effectively be a Challenge Cup Final dress rehearsal with the sides meeting at Wembley just two weeks after and it was suggested to Burgess that last Sunday’s semi-final was the source of his side’s downfall, with the match taking a heavy toll on his players.
The Englishman agreed, stating: “You can see we looked flat. The first set of the game gives that away when they marched us for 60, 70 metres.
“We’re thin on numbers too. The guys have been playing pretty tough games for the last four or five weeks. At some point, it was bound to catch us up but we were pretty poor tonight.
“There’s a couple of things to work on but we’ll be okay.”
Asked about that injury room that he had referenced, Burgess said: “We try not to look in there really. We try to focus on what we’ve got and who we are and how we can still improve as a group.
“Tonight we just missed some important fundamentals. We were poor with the ball and physically we lost the contest.”
One positive was the fact he believed his side had come through injury-free, noting: “We’ll see how we pull up from today. I think we’ve come through a relatively unscathed which is the first time in a while so we’ll be okay. We’ll keep the guys together and get some hard work done.”
