Warrington Wolves prop Paul Vaughan has confirmed his Warrington Wolves’ exit with his 2026 playing future revealed as well.
In one of the most surprising transfers in recent times, Paul Vaughan will sign with Championship high flyers York Knights in a major statement of intent from the North Yorkshire side.
The Knights are leading the Championship under Mark Applegarth and their chairman has recently spoken on his belief that the club are well-placed for promotion under IMG, even stating ‘shame on them’ in a fiery message to the RFL in regards the possibility the IMG gradings are no longer how Super League is composed.
Within that message, he explained that York will be ready for Super League and that it’s his job to ensure that and by signing Paul Vaughan from Warrington Wolves, it’s clear that Clint Goodchild is fulfilling that promise.
The Knights have confirmed that they have signed the Australian forward on a one-year deal for the 2026 season in one of the most impressive pieces of recruitment by a Championship side ever.
Warrington Wolves’ forward signs with York Knights
Announcing the deal, the Knights said: “York Knights are delighted to confirm the signing of Super League and former NRL forward, Paul Vaughan for 2026, thanks to the support of Squad Builder!
“The 34 year-old, who is currently in his third year at Warrington Wolves, will make the switch to the LNER Community Stadium next season.”
Warrington had hoped to retain the Australian but ultimately, Vaughan opted to sign with the Knights and he’s explained why.
“After speaking with Clint (Goodchild), I was really impressed by his energy, passion and vision for the club,” the Warrington Wolves’ prop said.
“Our conversation left me excited about this move which will be great, not just for me, but for my family as well.
“Joining the Knights represents at new challenge in a different way for me. I bring a wealth of leadership to the club and I’m looking forward to linking up with the group, connecting with the fans, and being part of what’s building at York.”
Mark Applegarth was also, understandably, excited, stating: “In my opinion, he’s still one of the best props in Super League. It’s a real statement signing made by the club.
“As a coach, I’m looking forward to getting a real genuine leader of the pack. He leads by actions too.
“After speaking with him, he’s coming for the right reasons and I think it will help push York to the next level.”
