Warrington Wolves man leaves on season-long loan

Warrington Wolves have sent one of their speedy outside backs out on loan for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Rugby union convert Alfie Johnson has left the Halliwell Jones Stadium and will instead be playing at The Shay for the remainder of the 2025 season, after signing a season-long loan deal with Championship leaders Halifax Panthers.

Johnson signed for Warrington ahead of the start of the season with Sam Burgess and the Wolves taking the gamble on the former England Sevens star.

He had previously trialled with Leeds Rhinos but Sam Burgess took the plunge and signed him, however, Johnson has found game time hard to come by. He has made just two appearances for Warrington, once in the Challenge Cup and once in Round Four of Super League.

The 23-year-old has also made two appearances in the Championship, on loan at Widnes and London, but he will now hope to string some games together after the announcement of his season-long loan.

Johnson has found a nice landing spot with Halifax, who currently top the Championship table and are having a strong season under new head coach Kyle Eastmond.

Eastmond is another to have played in both codes and at centre as well so Johnson could potentially have a wonderful mentor there for the remainder of the season.

Halifax confirmed the news of Johnson’s arrival via a club statement, which read: “Halifax Panthers are delighted to announce the signing of Alfie Johnson on a season long loan from Super League side Warrington Wolves.

“The 23 year old joins the Panthers with immediate effect, bolstering Kyle Eastmond’s squad ahead of this Sunday’s Round 10 clash with Doncaster RLFC at The Shay.

“A former Harlequins academy centre or winger, Johnson adds some strike to the Panthers backline. A Rugby Union convert, representing England and Great Britain in Sevens, he joined the Wolves after impressing head coach Sam Burgess while on trial with fellow Super League giants Leeds Rhinos, signing a two year deal at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The Panthers also confirmed that the former Warrington Wolves man will be available for selection this weekend when they host Doncaster.
