Warrington Wolves lock in squad to face Catalans as Sam Burgess makes double change

Warrington Wolves v st helens

Warrington Wolves have confirmed their squad for Thursday night’s Super League clash against Catalans Dragons with key forward Toff Sipley dropping out through injury.

Sam Burgess spoke to media, including BBC Radio Merseyside, on Monday to confirm that the NRL recruit would not play and would be out for another two to three weeks, so he’s dropped out of the 21-man squad.

His replacement comes in the form of Max Wood, freshly recalled from his loan at Hull FC with the young prop now set to be offered a crack in the Wire first team on Thursday night.

It’s a massive game for Warrington following last week’s loss to Leeds Rhinos and particularly in light of the tough run of fixtures that the Wolves have, facing Leigh twice as well as Hull KR and Wigan in the four games after this one.

In Catalans Dragons, they face an opponent who have already downed Wire once and have also won three of their last four. The 21-man squads for each side have now been confirmed ahead of Thursday’s clash.

Warrington Wolves team news

As expected, both Cai Taylor-Wray and Toff Sipley drop out after the confirmation from Sam Burgess that neither man would play with those being the only changes to the squad.

The pair who link up are Max Wood, a like-for-like swap with Sipley, and fellow forward Tom McKinney who has spent time on loan in the Championship this year.

Sam Stone remains out with a hamstring injury whilst centre Toby King is also out long-term.

Catalans Dragons team news

John Cartwright makes three changes to his squad with all three players who drop out being outside backs as veteran Tommy Makinson missed out alongside young homegrown talents Clement Martin and Leo Darrelatour.

Josh Simm returns as an outright winger whilst Lenny Marc is also called up as an outside back option but perhaps the biggest piece of team news is that captain Benjamin Garcia is back in the squad.

Garcia is set to play for the first time since round 13 in a massive boost with Catalans having missed their skipper in the past two games despite still winning.
