Warrington Wolves legend Stefan Ratchford has formally announced his retirement and he’s now spoken on what his future holds with the 37-year-old hinting at an off-field role with the club.
Ratchford will call time on his incredible career when the season ends but Saturday saw him play his final game at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in front of his beloved Warrington Wolves fans. Unfortunately for Ratchford, it was a 34-12 defeat to Leigh Leopards.
With over 350 games in primose and blue, Ratchford ranks 16th all-time for club appearances having debuted for Wire back in 2012. He’ll add a further two games to that tally this season with Sam Burgess likely to call on him in either the halves or centres given the club’s injury issues, however, he reflected post-match on Saturday on his incredible career.
Speaking on his final campaign, he said: “It’s obviously not the way we’d have liked to go out with this result but the season in particular, it’s been a frustrating season and very up and down. We’ve showed glimpses at times and then other times we’ve been horrendous.”
It’s a very apt way of describing Warrington with the Wolves just minutes from winning the Challenge Cup, yet also dishing up performances such as their final three where they’ve been handily beaten by Huddersfield, Salford and Leigh.

Looking back more so at his own career rather than this past Warrington Wolves season, Ratchford explained that the milestones pass by without any realisation and that he’ll appreciate them far more when he finally does hang up the boots.
He explained: “I think when you’re in the moment, you probably don’t appreciate what you’re in and what you’re doing, and kind of how long you’ve been in it.
“I think once I do step away and look back, I think I’ll look back with some great memories, some very fond memories.”
He continued: “I’ve been fortunate enough to go all over the world with this job, and it’s something that when you’re growing up, you probably want to play one game, so to play, I don’t know, I think I’m at 470 or something at the moment. It’s been a great ride.
“Obviously, it’s sad to end, but it’s got to come to an end at some point. Unfortunately, it’s just come up in the season that’s been a pretty disappointing for us.”
Ratchford ‘hopeful’ of off-field role with Warrington
Informed of the fact that he ranked sixteenth for appearances and sixth for the number of goals kicked in a Warrington Wolves shirt, Ratchford again explained: “I actually had no idea. Like I said, it’s something whilst you’re in the moment, you probably don’t look at the milestones and what you’re achieving whilst you’re going.
“Once I go into it and I look back, there’ll be a lot of fond memories but hopefully, there’s a few more minutes to come yet. Like I said, we’ve got two games and unfortunately they’re both away but hopefully we’ll get some mates up there and hopefully get that 650th goal.”
Beyond these final two games, it also looks like there could be a future for Ratchford at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
“Hopefully. We’re just discussing that at the moment,” he responded when asked about his future.
“Hopefully there’s a role here at the club. That’s what’s being discussed at the moment. There’s nothing nailed down, but hopefully, yeah.
“I’ve been here a long time. Hopefully, I can extend that time a little longer and I can have some sort of impact on the field.”
