Warrington Wolves captain George Williams has provided an update on his injury and the recovery timeline as well as a verdict on the club’s 2025 so far.

Williams is one of several key players out injured for Warrington at the moment with both Marc Sneyd and Matty Ashton failing HIAs during the Wolves win over St Helens last week, with Sneyd suffering a broken eye socket as well.

Ashton should be available for next week’s Challenge Cup semi-final whilst Sneyd will likely be back in the coming weeks but Williams suffered a longer-term injury with the club confirming he had to undergo ankle surgery.

Ahead of his side’s Magic Weekend clash against Wigan Warriors, Williams has provided an injury update and given an insight into Warrington Wolves under Sam Burgess in 2025.

“I’m struggling at the minute, I’ve had surgery on my ankle,” the Warrington and England captain confirmed.

“It’s called a tightrope but the posh word from the physio is syndesmosis but I’m two weeks into my recovery.

“I’m hoping to get back in the next four to five weeks.”

Warrington Wolves skipper in race to make possible Challenge Cup final

Should Warrington Wolves defeat Leigh Leopards next week then Williams would be touch and go to make the Challenge Cup Final, however, Wire must first overcome a strong Leigh side.

Leigh opened the show at Magic Weekend when they beat Catalans 26-24 on day one and Williams has given his own verdict on Magic Weekend, praising the return to St James Park.

He explained: “As a player these are the ones you want to be involved in. I think we’ve found a home for Magic Weekend in Newcastle.”

Williams also spoke on his side’s chances against Wigan, who defeated Warrington 48-24 when the teams headed out to Las Vegas in Round Three, and the Wire captain confirmed his side are up against it.

He said: “We’ve got some numbers out and some players who have got the chance to step up and make their mark on the team.

“For us today, it’s all about defence. They’re a great great team but we’ve got to defend well if we’ve got any chance to win this game.

“It’s a challenge and I think it will test our character and what we’re about. Under Sam, we want to be known as a gritty team and we’ve not always shown that this year so I think today is a great challenge for that.”
