“We’re just guessing” – Warrington Wolves boss asks consistency question following Sam Powell sin-bin in Leigh Leopards defeat

Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess was left less than impressed after the sin-bin to hooker Sam Powell in the Magic Weekend defeat to Leigh Leopards. 

Powell was sent for 10 minutes after a hip drop on Leigh centre Tesi Niu.

The incident was a definition of what a hip drop tackle looks like, so there can’t be any complaints over the former Wigan man receiving a card.

What Burgess finds hard to get his head around though, is the fact that last week, Arron Lindop was involved in an ugly challenge with Catalans centre Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet, and as a result he is set for six weeks on the sidelines.

The Frenchman was subsequently banned for two games by the Match Review Panel, but escaped a card during the game.

The Warrington boss was brief and snappy in his response, with plenty of frustration coming from what was a very underwhelming display at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

“There’s a reason you’re asking the question,” he replied to the press. “Last week, I’d say we had, let’s call it a similar tackle, and there’s no sin-bin.

“I just wonder if the rules have changed during the week. I don’t know. I don’t know.

“I’ve not got ears on the commentary. I don’t know what the referees are saying, but we’re just guessing.

“I can’t comment on it, because last week’s not a sin-bin, this week it’s a sin-bin. Explain that to me.”

Burgess was then asked if he would contact the RFL for clarification over why the two incidents were judged to be different.

After a long pause, the Wire boss said: “No. That’s just wasting my time. I’m not wasting my time. Just get on with it.”
