In a season of academy players delivering for Warrington Wolves, the club have confirmed that one of their best from 2026 has undergone surgery and will be sidelined for over a month.
Josh Thewlis is far from a 2026 breakout with the winger boasting over 100 Super League appearances and a total of 134 for Warrington, however, he’s had his best season to date and played a starring role for large periods of the year.
That’s come as a result of his move to full-back given the injury to Cai Taylor-Wray with Thewlis playing 11 of his 17 games this year at full-back.
The most recent of those was in the 18-16 win over Catalans Dragons, back in late June with Thewlis not playing since on account of an ankle injury he picked up in that game. Speaking ahead of Magic Weekend, Burgess indicated that it could be three to four weeks but Thewlis has now had surgery, something that will rule him out for even longer.

Josh Thewlis out for majority of Warrington Wolves’ regular season
A club statement was shared on social media to confirm the disappointing news with Thewlis out for up to six weeks.
Posting on X, Warrington Wolves announced: “Head Coach, Sam Burgess has today confirmed Josh Thewlis has undergone surgery and will be sidelined for four to six weeks.”
It’s a major blow for Wire given how strong Thewlis has been in 2026, playing 13 times in Super League and registering a combined 16 tries and assists as well as an impressive average of over 100 run metres per game.
Should he miss six weeks then that would rule him out of two games against Hull KR, as well as fixtures against Leigh, Castleford, Bradford, York, Huddersfield, and possibly even Hull FC.
