Wakefield Trinity v Warrington Wolves team news as Sam Burgess hands debut to son of St Helens legend

Sam Burgess

Warrington Wolves travel to face Wakefield Trinity today and the team news for both sides has now been confirmed.

Trinity upset the odds and won 30-16 when these sides met earlier in the season but Warrington were returning from Las Vegas and once again Wakefield have an advantage in that they didn’t play last week.

They’ve had two weeks to recover from their Magic Weekend win over Castleford Tigers whereas the Wolves faced a gritty Leigh side in hot conditions last Sunday, with Warrington ultimately winning to make it to the Challenge Cup Final.

Marc Sneyd returned for that game in a huge boost and he could be a difference maker today but who lines up alongside him is the bigger question, with Stefan Ratchford seemingly the front-runner after getting the nod last week.

As for Wakefield, they named an unchanged 21-man squad but it was confirmed that two who didn’t play at Magic Weekend were in with a chance.

Wakefield Trinity team news

Daryl Powell has made a major change with Jake Trueman missing from the squad and that’s seen Max Jowitt move into the halves.

Josh Rourke is recalled and fills in at full-back to form a spine of Rourke, Jowitt, Lino and Hood with Harvey Smith the utility off the bench.

Seth Nikotemo was in consideration to return but he is named 18th man with Jack Croft and Josh Griffin playing in the second row. Cam Scott is also on the bench alongside Isaiah Vagana, Mathieu Cozza and the aforementioned Smith.

Wakefield Trinity: Josh Rourke; Lachlan Walmsley, Corey Hall, Oliver Pratt, Tom Johnstone; Max Jowitt, Mason Lino; Mike McMeeken, Liam Hood, Caius Faatili; Jack Croft, Josh Griffin, Jay Pitts

Bench: Mathieu Cozza, Isaiah Vagana, Cameron Scott, Harvey Smith

Warrington Wolves team news

With Matty Ashton out for the season and Josh Thewlis out after failing a HIA, Sam Burgess is forced to make changes on the wings and that has seen Connor Wrench make his return with Arron Lindop moved to the wing.

Jake Thewlis is the other winger but another big call is to give Zack Gardner, the son of Ade, his debut from the bench. That’s because Toby King also misses out.

Ratchford is preferred over Leyland once again with the former London man named 18th man. Lachlan Fitzgibbon is another who drops out after suffering a rib injury last week.

Warrington Wolves: Matt Dufty; Arron Lindop, Rodrick Tai, Connor Wrench, Jake Thewlis; Stefan Ratchford, Marc Sneyd; Luke Yates, Sam Powell, Paul Vaughan; Adam Holroyd, Dan Russell, Ben Currie

Bench: James Harrison, Jordy Crowther, Joe Philbin, Zack Gardner
