Wakefield Trinity v Warrington Wolves team news as young flyer returns amid Wire outside back crisis

Wakefield Trinity host Warrington Wolves on Sunday looking to earn a second win over their opponents this season and the team news is now in.

Trinity faced Warrington in Round Four of Super League and they played a Vegas-drained Warrington off the park for large parts of the match, winning 30-16 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

In this reverse fixture, Wakefield will once again have an advantage with Daryl Powell’s side not playing last weekend whereas Sam Burgess’ side playing a tough Challenge Cup semi-final in very hot and dry conditions.

That game also saw winger Matty Ashton suffer a season-ending injury in a massive blow for both Warrington Wolves but also England, with Ashton among the candidates to start in the Ashes.

There’s also needle between these sides given that Daryl Powell was sacked as Warrington head coach after a loss to Trinity back in 2023, with Sam Burgess ultimately replacing him. Both head coaches have now confirmed their teams.

Trinity assistant Michael Shenton confirmed earlier in the week that Matty Russell was in line to play this week and the winger has been named to the squad.

Daryl Powell has named an unchanged 21-man squad with the Magic Weekend heroes of Caius Faatili and Lachlan Walmsley named once again with Walmsley set to be the beneficiary if Russell does not play.

Injury issues still plague the club with Caleb Hamlin-Uele, Ky Rodwell, Renouf Atoni, Thomas Doyle and Oliver Russell all missing.

Once again there is no George Williams or Danny Walker with Matty Ashton unfortunately the most recent addition to the long-term injured list. Josh Thewlis left the field with a HIA and also drops out of the squad.

Connor Wrench and young outside back Jack Gardner are called up to cover the absence of Ashton and Thewlis with Sam Burgess set to be without his two first-choice wingers.

Marc Sneyd is named with both Oli Leyland and Stefan Ratchford vying to start alongside him with the latter playing that role in Sunday’s Challenge Cup win.
