Wakefield Trinity star Tom Johnstone sets out return date in positive update

Wakefield Trinity winger Tom Johnstone has shared the positive news that he expects to return from injury this weekend in an all-important clash against Hull KR.

The Robins will still be reeling from Saturday’s Challenge Cup Final loss to Wigan Warriors but Trin have a massive chance to leapfrog Hull KR and move into fourth, or even third if St Helens lose to Leeds Rhinos on Thursday night.

Johnstone played through the 2025 Ashes series with an injury and that has impacted him in 2026 with the flying winger only able to feature six times and not since mid-April in the 52-12 win against Bradford Bulls, a game in which Johnstone scored four times.

With Daryl Powell yet to speak to the media this week and the 21-man squad not set to be confirmed until midday on Thursday, it looked like it could be a nervy wait for Wakefield fans to see if this would finally be the week that Johnstone returns.

However, the main man himself has spoken, sharing a positive update in a video shared on the Wakefield Trinity social accounts.

Wakefield Trinity handed huge boost for Hull KR clash

Speaking at Tuesday’s Super League Magic Weekend promo event, Johnstone was asked when fans could expect to next see him back on the pitch, to which he replied: “Saturday.”

That home game against Hull KR is a massive clash for Trin who have fallen short in recent battles against fellow top six sides, so having Johnstone available is a major boost.

“I’ve been training with the boys a bit longer than anticipated but I’m going to play on Saturday against KR, hopefully,” the winger revealed.

All those at Wakefield will be hoping that they can emulate the round 26 performance against Hull KR last year, when they stunned the Robins by taking a 26-0 lead into half-time before winning 28-12 to help cement their return to the play-offs.
