Wakefield Trinity boss Daryl Powell believes his side produced their best showing of 2026 this afternoon in victory over Castleford Tigers
Trinity secured a comfortable 34-0 win over their local rivals to round out Super League’s Easter weekend.
Oli Pratt and Jake Trueman both scored doubles, whilst Corey Hall, Tyson Smoothy and Cameron Scott also got on the scoresheet.
Had the wind not been so treacherous, Wakefield could have had a few more points with Max Jowitt missing five of the seven conversions.
Powell spoke to Sky Sports post-match to give his verdict, and he was a delighted head coach after seeing what his side produced at the Onebore Stadium.
“That was a step up for us defensively,” he explained. “Cas had played some pretty smart stuff last week and we knew we needed to be pretty aggressive defensively.
“I thought that was awesome. We played a really tidy game for large parts. I thought we could have been a little bit cleaner in good attacking positions, but I thought the attitude from everybody today was outstanding and that’s what a rugby league is built on.
Trueman put on a stellar showing, whilst Mason Lino grew into the game on his return from injury.
Their pack was utterly dominant, with four of the forwards running for over 100m – including Tray Lolesio and Caleb Hamlin-Uele who both started on the bench.
All those factors combine to make one happy Powell, who thought his side were in their best form of the season so far this afternoon.
He said: “We played some really great rugby league against Leeds in the Challenge Cup, but I think we’ve been gritty and tough and lacked a little bit of cutting edge rugby league.
“I thought today was a step up with and without the ball. Most areas of the field, I think we can calm down a little bit when we get into attacking positions, but the boys are expressing themselves a little bit.
“The score blew out a little bit at the end with some real smart rugby league from our outside backs.
“I’m really pleased. I think we’ve got a real big game next week and I thought today was important, obviously for the two points, but leading into that game as well.”
