Wakefield Trinity man becomes latest Salford Red Devils loanee as Hull KR half-back recalled

Salford Red Devils man joins Leeds Rhinos

Wakefield Trinity man Oliver Russell has made the move across Super League to Salford Red Devils on loan.

The half-back has joined up with the Red Devils for the next two weeks in what will come as a big boost to Paul Rowley’s strugglers.

Salford have seen Danny Richardson return to Hull KR this week, but Russell has arrived to fill that void in time to represent the club against Castleford Tigers on Sunday.

He’ll remain with Salford for next week’s clash with Leeds Rhinos, too, with the club striving to pick up just its second win of the Super League season.

Wakefield Trinity man has point to prove

Russell has struggled for minutes this season after struggling with a hand injury. However, he is fit enough to return to action and he’ll be keen to put pressure on the likes of Mason Lino and Jake Trueman by impressing with the Red Devils.

The scrum-half is still in his first year with Wakefield after penning a four-year deal in the off-season. However, he has made just seven appearances for the club, with his last outing coming in April against Leigh Leopards in the Challenge Cup.

The 26-year-old is no stranger to a loan move, having spent time with Batley Bulldogs, Workington Town and Halifax Panthers in similar circumstances during his career.

All of those spells came as a Huddersfield Giants player, with Russell emerging through the ranks at the Giants and spending seven seasons in the first-team picture at the club.

He made 102 appearances in claret and gold, scoring five tries, 203 goals and five field goals to rack up 431 points. He made the decision to leave the John Smith’s Stadium at the end of the 2024 season, though, with the Giants not able to offer him first-team assurances.
