Wakefield Trinity have acted quickly to announce their Tyson Smoothy replacement following confirmation of his exit, with the club now revealing that they have signed Mason Teague for 2027.
Teague will become Trinity’s third NRL recruit ahead of the 2027 season with Wakefield also signing Leeds Rhinos’ Cameron Smith in what is already a very impressive recruitment cycle.
Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is arguably the most impressive, whilst Emre Guler will add to their already-powerful pack, but Teague fills a position of need following the confirmation that Tyson Smoothy will head back to Australia just one year into a three-year deal.
Smoothy had signed from NRL champions Brisbane Broncos but he will depart after just one season. The hooker has signed a three-year deal with incoming NRL club Perth Bears and Trinity have filled the void by signing ex-Penrith Panthers junior Teague.
Teague, 23, is currently playing for Queensland Cup side Burleigh Bears but formerly played for the Dolphins, making eight NRL appearances.
He’s the club’s latest recruit from the Q-Cup with stars such as Caius Faatili being found in the NRL’s reserve grade comp.
Wakefield Trinity sign Mason Teague for 2027
Confirming that Teague will sign a two-year deal, Wakefield announced his deal via a club statement, claiming that he arrives with a ‘huge level of excitement surrounding him’.
His eight games in the NRL came under legendary coach Wayne Bennett whilst he’s also capped five times by the Cook Islands, who he will represent at this year’s World Cup.
Also capable at loose forward, the hooker brings versatility as Wakefield look to continue their ascent towards the top of Super League.
Speaking on the move, Teague said: “I’m really excited to come over to Super League for the next two seasons. Wakefield are an incredibly strong club who are really going places and going well this year and I hope I can add to that upon joining.
“With the signings the club have made for next season, I know this club can kick on again. I know the fan base at Wakefield really gets behind the team and I can’t wait to meet all the fans.”
