Cameron Smith’s first words as Wakefield Trinity confirm 2027 signing of Leeds Rhinos forward

Wakefield Trinity have secured the ‘massive coup’ of signing Leeds Rhinos’ star Cameron Smith for the 2027 season with details of the deal now revealed.

It was reported earlier in the week that Smith would make the switch from Headingley to Belle Vue with Leeds Rhinos then confirming that their former captain would be leaving at the end of the season.

Wakefield have now confirmed the signing, announcing Smith on a four-year deal that starts in 2027 and will see him stay at the club until the end of the 2030 season.

Still only 27, Smith has made over 160 appearances for Leeds, including 149 in Super League with the loose forward set to add another option to a pack that has already tied down plenty of talent.

Matty Storton was the latest to sign a new long-term deal that keeps him at the club until the end of 2029, with Smith’s deal set to keep him at Trinity for a year longer.

He’ll make the switch upon the completion of the 2026 season with Wakefield airing plans of how they will use the forward.

Cameron Smith explains Wakefield Trinity move

Trinity’s signing announced revealed that Smith will work alongside NRL recruit Jazz Tevaga at loose forward, but will also offer depth in the front and back row.

Despite the short distance between Leeds and Wakefield, it will still be a massive change for Smith who debuted for the Rhinos at 17 and was made captain ahead of the 2024 season.

Speaking on his end-of-season move, Smith said: “I’m really excited to be joining Wakefield next season. It’s a club with huge ambition and a clear vision for the future. I’m looking forward to being part of what’s being built here.”

He did also send a message to Leeds fans, adding: “However, until the end of the season, my full focus remains on giving everything I have for Leeds and finishing my time here the right way.”

Wakefield’s Director of Rugby, Ste Mills said: “Bringing Cameron to the club is a huge statement for us. He’s a proven leader, a relentless competitor, and someone who embodies everything we want this team to stand for.

“Cameron has been outstanding at Leeds, and to secure a player of his calibre speaks volumes about the direction we’re heading in. He’s hungry, he’s driven, and he’s coming here to win.

“We believe he’ll raise standards across the entire group, both on and off the field, and we’re incredibly proud to welcome him to the club.”
