Wakefield Trinity handed major boost as council approve further stadium development

Wakefield Trinity are going well on the pitch at the moment but they’ve just received a major boost off the field as well with the council approving planning permission for stadium redevelopments.

It’s fair to say that the DIY Kitchens Stadium has transformed a lot already in the past few years, with the final months under John Minards and Michael Carter getting the ball rolling before new owner Matt Ellis moved the project on even further.

Ellis has helped Wakefield build a squad that can compete on the field but he also helped the club gain that all-important Grade A status, something which guaranteed Trinity a spot in Super League.

IMG has its critics but ultimately, it is about raising standards and Wakefield are the perfect example of that and despite returning to Super League, they’re not done yet with the off-field development.

They’ve now had planning permission granted for a number of new developments which further secures the club’s IMG status, and elevates the fan experience, even more.

Wakefield Trinity stadium developments given green light in IMG boost

In documents accessed via the Wakefield Council website, it confirms that Trinity had planning permission approved last Friday on developments to the West Stand and the TV gantry, as well as permission to relocate a bar and create a new standing terrace in the South Stand.

They will also be able to add cladding to the rear of existing and proposed covered areas with all the approvals simply making the stadium more modern and ensuring it is compliant with IMG.

The application was first received in November last year and since then, 338 responses either in support or opposition were heard. Of those, a whopping 333 were in support with just five opposing.

With the planning now approved, Wakefield Trinity have three years to complete the proposed changes before the permission lapses, however, given the rate at which Matt Ellis has already overseen change you’d expect that not to be an issue.

Currently, Daryl Powell’s side sit seventh in Super League, just one point outside the play-offs after their memorable win over Wigan Warriors at home last Friday night. They’ll now travel to Craven Park to try and cause another major upset.
