Wakefield Trinity forward set to leave as Daryl Powell confirms end of season exit plan

Josh Griffin will be leaving Wakefield Trinity at the end of the Super League season, Daryl Powell has confirmed.

The back-rower scored Wakefield’s second try on what was their most memorable night of the season so far on Friday as they beat Wigan Warriors 16-10 at Belle Vue. Making the most of a slip from Jake Wardle, Griffin was allowed to get himself on the end of a deft Mason Lino grubber and touch down unopposed before the break.

That capped what was an impressive showing from the back-rower, who pressured Harry Smith well and helped Wakefield get the better of Wigan’s lethal left edge. He made 33 tackles in the game while also running for 103 metres from 13 carries.

It’s little surprise then that Powell could be heard singing his praises after the contest with the head coach claiming the performance was the best he has seen from the 35-year-old in some time.

However, Powell also confirmed that this season would be Griffin’s last in a Wakefield shirt, with the forward’s contract ticking down towards an expiry.

Wakefield Trinity boss on Josh Griffin

“I think he’s been like a different man this year to be honest,” Powell said when asked about the former Salford Red Devils and Hull FC man. “Just his effort stuff, his kick chase, his constant carrying around Harry Smith aggressively.

“I thought he was really good and that’s the best I’ve seen him in a long time. I said that to him in the changing rooms, but I thought he was exceptional.”

Asked by Serious About RL where Griffin’s future might lie, Powell added: “Not here. I think he’s doing some other little bits. I’ll let him tell you what he’s doing but he won’t be here next year, he’ll be somewhere else.”

Griffin is already working as a strength and conditioning coach with League One side Midlands Hurricanes and while nothing has been confirmed, the expectation is that he will drop down into the part-time ranks if he is to continue playing.

He has been with Wakefield since leaving Hull FC in July 2023 and in that time he has made 43 appearances.
