Wakefield Trinity are proving everybody wrong in 2025, and boss Daryl Powell is confident they will be a top six side come the end of the season.
After a string of tough fixtures, facing Leeds, Leigh, Wigan and Hull KR, all of whom are in the playoff spots, Wakefield have put up a good showing against the top teams.
Powell knows it will be difficult, but there is every chance his Wakefield side will be playing playoff football in 2025.
In his post-match interview after the defeat to the Robins, he said: “I think we have a real chance. Leeds were clinging on against us at the end, Leigh got us at the end, we have beaten Wigan, and then for half a game we are in this, with a pretty patched up team.
He continued: “I don’t think we need to worry about anybody, I’ve been saying that all the way through to the boys. We are confident that we can front up to anybody.”
Wakefield Trinity had Hull KR ‘rattled’ as Powell talks play-off push
Injuries have hampered Trinity’s progress this season, with numerous players currently playing out of position. It is unfortunate, but the 59-year-old knows it is just part of the game.
“The challenge for us is to stay durable across the whole Super League season, that’s the hard bit.” He said: “We’ve had injuries but we’re still in a good place. If we can really get our act together over the next four weeks, then we are in the shooting match. I’ll be confident with the group that I’ve got that we can put a real challenge in.”
Despite the defeat, which included a hat-trick from Rovers winger Tom Davies, Powell was pleased with the effort his depleted team showed.
He explained: “Plenty of teams come here and get their backsides handed to them, and I think in that first half, they were rattled, Hull KR. We couldn’t quite go on win it but that’s not to say we won’t later on in the season. “
