Wakefield Trinity boss Daryl Powell will have a tough decision to make come the start of the new Super League season.
Trinity played their first game of pre-season on Boxing Day as they lost 18-10 to Leeds Rhinos in the traditional festive friendly. Powell admits he will take very little from the contest, though, and given his side still have seven weeks to go until they kick off their league season against Toulouse Olympique at Belle Vue.
But, when the start of the campaign appears on the horizon, Powell knows he will have to make a tough decision in his outside backs.
Cam Scott featured in the back row against Leeds Rhinos, but Wakefield see him as a centre primarily and that means he will be competing with Corey Hall and Oliver Pratt for a spot in the starting XIII.
Scott made 22 appearances for the West Yorkshire outfit last season and large majority of them came at centre, but Pratt and Hall will be pushing themselves to claim one of the two starting centre spots, too.
As such, with Powell clear in his belief that Scott is best as a centre, he knows he has a headache when it comes to his round one selection.
Daryl Powell on his Wakefield Trinity selection headache
“I thought he was strong today,” Powell said when asked about Cam Scott’s appearance in the back-row. “His lines behind the ruck, that’s one of the strong parts of his game and he’s very good at that. He’s just an option really and I think we were pretty light back-rower wise today.
“Young Ewan Molyneux got knocked out just before half-time so it made it hard for us to rotate and Isaiah (Vagana) ended up playing 80 minutes today which I didn’t really intend. It is what it is.
“It’s an option but his primary position we see as centre and all three of those centres who played today, Corey, Ollie and Cam, have all had outstanding pre-seasons. It’s a fair battle there to play in the centre and Pratty can play on the wing as well as that. As we work through this next month or so, it’s going to be a decent decision once we get to round one.”
