Daryl Powell believes aspects of his Wakefield Trinity side’s performance against Castleford Tigers were ‘dumb’, despite claiming the two points on offer. Wakefield beat their local rivals 13-12 at Belle Vue but they had to come from 12-0 down to do it after struggling for traction in the first half.
Castleford scored three first half tries, with Jason Qareqare touching down for efforts either side of a Sam Wood try, and that gave Danny McGuire’s side a dominant lead at the break. Wakefield scored their first points of the night through Harvey Smith, who helped to stem the flow of the contest, and from there the home side produced the goods needed as Max Jowitt touched down and Mason Lino kicked a drop goal.
That was enough for the Trin to claim their first home win of the season and Powell was more than happy, but he believes they still have plenty to work on.
“That was tough to watch at times,” the Wakefield Trinity boss said. “We were pretty poor in the first half, Castleford were outstanding, put us under pressure and I don’t think we handled it well.
“We found a way back in but it took us a long time, I thought Castleford were under pressure physically at the mid-point of the second half and we found the try. Just to win the game like that… I thought we were pretty dumb but we won the game so I’m pleased about that.
“I just think we found a way to win. I still felt we were pretty dumb at the end there but I just thought it was a really good game. For a neutral watching that you’d be saying it was unbelievable entertainment.”
On his side’s first win of the season at Belle Vue, he added: “I haven’t spoken about it too much. It’s important. I’ve tried my best to back away from it, but it’s important winning at home.
“It’s a big win for us. Four out of eight, we had a tough start but that’s awesome for us. To be 50 per cent at this point we’re really pleased.”
