Wakefield Trinity boss Daryl Powell thought his side’s performance against Salford Red Devils was almost flawless.
Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Powell admitted that whilst he does feel for the Salford club and everyone involved, his team had a job to do.
Wakefield ran in thirteen tries to beat the Red Devils 72-10, equalling their biggest victory in Super League.
Powell said he was pleased with his side, especially considering a number of injuries to key players.
He said: “I thought we were really good, apart from the start of the second half.
“I thought we were outstanding, really good control of our game.
“I feel for Salford, it’s a real tough situation they’re in, but all we can do is be the best that we can be, and I thought we were today.”
Whilst it was a team performance, he wanted to point out his two Super League debutants, Ellis Lingard and Jayden Myers, stepping up to the first team.
He added: “Victories like this are pretty special. I think you saw that the fact that we were able to put a couple of young kids out there who haven’t played for us in Super League, and I thought they both did a great job, Ellis and Jayden.
Wakefield Trinity making moves into Super League play-off spots
That victory took Trinity into the top six, leap-frogging Hull FC, with an extra point and a superior points difference.
On that, he said: “Obviously, for us as a team, we’ve come into Super League this year, and we’ve shown we belong there.
“I think we’ve built a genuine squad that can compete and do a job. We’re in a good place, we’re confident on both sides of the ball, and that’s really important to us.
“Time will tell, I think if we keep playing like we are, we’ve got a confidence about us, and I think the belief is growing that we’re a genuine team.
“It’s going to be tough, but all we can do is week after week, just keep turning up and doing the things that are getting us results at the moment. If we do that, then we’ll be in a good place.”
Next up for Wakefield Trinity are Leeds Rhinos away, and whilst they might have beaten them in the first round of Super League, Powell expects a different Rhinos team to show up.
He finished: “I think we can beat them again, but they’ve improved since that. They’re really resilient defensively; they’re the most difficult team to break down defensively statistically in the final 20, and they showed that again yesterday.
“I think we’re a different team at the moment as well, and we’ve improved, so it’ll be a good challenge.”
